Happens to me at times. A couple of things I do . . .
This is on my desktop computer:
1. I log-off and back on; then, after entering my password, I give the email page a little more time to load before going to the "Mail" tab, or
2. Log-off/log-on 2 or 3 times, or
3. Just come back later.

I seem to encounter that problem about once a month and one of the above 3 steps have always worked (at least for me). I always use Google Chrome with it. This AOL email account was the first one I ever had (started with it back in the 90's) and have kept it, among others.
